Sinkholes found at Bowling Green construction site

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Four sinkholes were discovered at the construction site of a new training facility for Bowling Green’s police and fire departments.

Back in May, construction began on the new facility that would be used by Bowling Green’s police and fire departments and replace Fire Station 5 on Porter Pike. During construction, the sinkholes were found, causing crews to change the design of the foundation a little bit. This is a project that has been in the works for almost a decade, so the city is doing its best to keep building on track and mitigate any future issues.

News 40 visited the site on Monday and got an update on the project.

Bowling Green public works director Andy Souza tells News 40 that they’ve been working on the holes that showed up after construction started, which he said usually don’t show up until things happen, such as construction or heavy rain.

Souza said they’ve run extensive testing on the ground and feel the solution they’ve found will be sound for the coming building.

With these “micropiles” serving as “stilts” for the foundation, Souza said if another sinkhole happened to occur, the structure would essentially be “floating over a hole” that they would then refill.
