Kentucky Fish & Wildlife plan to remove invasive carp

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – A partnership 15 years in the making hopes to reduce the amount of invasive carp in Kentucky rivers. Until that happens, steps need to be taken to protect yourself while on the water.

“They make themselves pretty evident, especially if you’ve got your running outboard motor. They’re very sensitive to that and they’ll take flight and jump out. So identifying/being aware of waters where they may occur…,” Eric Cummins, a biologist with Kentucky Fish & Wildlife says.

Carp can be found all throughout the Commonwealth, but are especially evident in the Green & Barren Rivers.

“They’re not quite as abundant, but the further you go down, especially Green River and Barren river, their abundance may increase a little bit,” Cummins says.

One way to make sure you stay safe is by downloading the new Fish Boat KY app.

“Essentially, it just gives you an in-hand access to any of that information that’s on our website about fishing and boating access. It gives you a picture of the access site you’re interested in and fishing information for that water body. Just some license information and just a lot of stuff at your fingertips, if you will, on your phone,” Cummins says.

You can download it on the iTunes or Google Play Store for free.

“You’ll be pleased with the amount of information you can get from that. It’s a good thing to visit if you take the time to load it,” Cummins says.
