Kentucky State Police investigating death of retired state trooper

PINE KNOT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police says it is investigating the death of a retired state trooper following a house fire.

KSP says it was requested yesterday to assist the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office after a fatality was discovered during the fire. Troopers responded to Johns Road in Pine Knot.

Police say investigators located male human remains once the fire was out.

After the remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office, they were identified as Phillip A. Hays, 57, of Pine Knot.

Authorities say Hays was a retired trooper from KSP. He graduated from Cadet Class #72 and retired from Post 11 London in 2013.

This death investigation is ongoing.
