The A.B.C.D.s of car seat sleep safety: protecting your baby on the go

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Car seats are wonderful tools to keep your babies safe in a collision, but when your little one falls asleep, those car seats can pose some serious risks.

That’s why the Barren River Area District Health Department is giving parents this simple A. B. C. D.s of car seat sleep safety.

A: Alone. Make sure your child is ALONE with no items in the seat.

B: back. Make sure your child’s BACK is against the seat with straps in the correct place.

C: car seat. Is your CAR SEAT the perfect size for your child? Car seat straps are one of the leading causes of choking when not properly secured, according to Barren River Health.

D: – distractions – clear your vehicle of DISTRACTIONS that could stop you from monitoring your child.

Childcare Health Consultant Jeanna Phelps said, “We don’t want babies to sleep in car seats, but we want them to be safe if they do….[The solution is] mostly being aware of your baby at all times and the things that can be causing them issues.”
