BOWLING GREEN, KY.- The Bike Safety Rodeo is coming to Jennings Creek Elementary this week!

The instructor, who’s been with the program for 25 years, teaches the kids the importance of always wearing a helmet and how to safely navigate their neighborhoods.

The kids get to hop on a bike themselves during the school day to learn hands-on.

For schools who want the Bike Safety Rodeo to come to them, this program is entirely free. It’s funded through the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“That’s the first time a lot of these kids have ever put a helmet on so they realize it’s cool I don’t look funny or anything like that, so hopefully that’s the start of getting them to wear a helmet throughout their life,” said Bike Safety Rodeo Coordinator Doug Beckhart.

Most kids ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for bike-related injuries more than any other sport…usually for broken bones, concussions, or other head trauma. For inquiries about the program, email Doug.Beckhart@nortonhealthcare.org
