Rep. Guthrie concerned with price tag for Trump’s July 4 event

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- South Central Kentucky Congressman Brett Guthrie said he has concerns over the price tag of President Donald Trump’s July 4th celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

As first reported by the Washington Post on Wednesday, $2.5 million is being diverted from entrance fees to national parks to help pay for some of the festivities in Washington.

Mammoth Cave National Park is in Congressman Guthrie’s district.

While the overall price for Trump’s event is not known, Guthrie told WNKY he plans to look at the numbers.

“We need to look at the overall accounting,” Guthrie said. “I think it’s worthwhile to celebrate our country. I know that since the president was at Bastille Day, he saw a similar French ceremony and kind of wanted to do the same ceremony. I don’t think the French were being over-military and over-political. It’s just the way they celebrate. I think that’s where he got the idea, but I do think the cost is concerning and we need to look at it.”

In addition to military tanks being on display and flyovers, President Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks Thursday evening from the Lincoln Memorial.
