WKU Lays Down New Foundation for Track and Field Success

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University track and field program showcased its newly resurfaced track to athletes and media members on Thursday, Sept. 17.
The project cost the university $1.2 million.
The achievement was celebrated with student-athletes, who were invited to test the surface and take team photos.
For the program, the upgrade represents more than a new look, but it is an opportunity for growth as well.
“We always say if we’re only maintaining, we’re falling behind,” WKU Athletic Director Todd Stewart said. “In the past, we’ve been limited on the number of home meets we could host just because of the condition of the track. Now, obviously, with this track being a state-of-the-art surface, I think it will greatly enhance our ability to host events.”
Eighteen years after the previous surface was installed, the facility joins a series of recent athletic upgrades on campus, underscoring the university’s commitment to its athletic infrastructure.
“These investments are generational investments that will impact student-athletes for the next 25 years,” Stewart said.
The track and field program saw two athletes, Sam Crenshaw and Kameron Horton, place nationally last season.
With improved safety and boosted morale, head coach Lee Wood expects the momentum to continue.
“They’re excited about being able to take pictures and being proud of our track,” Wood said. “I think it’s going to be a great marketing tool for us for recruiting as well.”
