What’s our Kentucky Derby weather forecast? + KSP seeking drunk drivers

FRANKLIN, Ky. – Kentucky Derby week is one of the most exciting times Kentuckians can experience.

People all across the Commonwealth, nation and globe are ramping up Thursday’s Thurby at Old Forester, Friday’s Kentucky Oaks fillies race and of course Saturday’s ‘Greatest Two Minutes in Sports’ at the Kentucky Derby.

However, keep in mind, if you’re planning on sipping those famous Derby Mint Juleps during all the fun, have a ride planned in advance.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Daniel Priddy says, “Everybody that’s from Kentucky looks forward to this and looks forward to the nation looking at our state, and we want to make sure that the roadways stay as safe as possible during this time.”

Trooper Priddy says the KSP will have units out doing extra patrols, especially in high traffic areas. Also have checkpoints looking for impaired drivers and other violations.

“Everybody’s going to be getting together. Everybody’s going to be having a good time with their families, their friends, dressed up in their hat….If you are going to consume alcohol, please don’t drive,” Priddy implores.

Next on the checklist, what about the weather? Are May showers in the forecast?

News 40’s Meteorologist Darius Mack says, “Odds are, almost half of the Derby Days have seen rain at any point during the day. This year, we’re watching for the chance of a few showers and clouds throughout your Derby day on Saturday, but it shouldn’t be a total washout.”

So, if you’re one to come prepared, best to bring your rain jacket on Friday morning… but you can plan to leave your umbrella in the car. Umbrellas are one of the items you can’t take to the Derby.

Mack says, “It may be another year of slipping and sliding, but hey you know what, it’s all about fun.”

To all you race lovers, have fun, stay safe and make the most of your 2022 Run for the Roses.
