U.S. 31-W Bridge repair project in Munfordville moved to spring

Bridge Repair

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – A repair project on the U.S. 31-W Bridge in Munfordville is being rescheduled to next spring.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District Four, the schedule change is due to timeline constraints with availability of materials and schedules extending into restricted holiday weekends, along with winter weather possibilities in late December into January.

Transportation officials say the project was announced earlier this month.

According to KYTC, it will involve steel repairs under the bridge deck, along with expansion joint seal replacements and minor concrete work on the upper side of the bridge deck.

Steel repairs will restore the structure’s weight rating to its full capacity, while joint seal replacements will better protect the bridge components beneath the deck from moisture, officials say.

KYTC states the bridge will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals for the majority of the project. Completion of the job will also require up to four weekend full closures, officials say.

Work requiring a single lane closure across the bridge is now estimated to begin in late March, with full weekend closures to take place mid-April.
