Team Kentucky reminds drivers to check child safety seats to save lives
FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police is reminding drivers to check that child safety seats are properly fitted and installed, an action that could save a life.
According to the agency, Child Passenger Safety Week is Sept. 20-26, a time to remind drivers to ensure their child seat’s height and weight requirements.
“Safety should always be the priority on the road, especially when it comes to our kids,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Knowing your child seat’s height and weight limits and making sure children are secured can make all the difference in keeping them safe.”
Vehicle crashes are the “leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13,” according to KSP.
In addition, the agency says research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that “in 39% of child fatalities in 2024, the victims were unrestrained.”
NHTSA also states that in passenger cars, car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers ages 1 through 4.
“Prevention is key to ensuring our kids are kept safe,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman. “Safety resources and experts are readily available to help caregivers have the peace of mind that their child’s seat is age-appropriate and installed correctly.”
