Real estate scams growing problem in Southern Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Real estate fraud is a growing problem around the country, and the issue has claimed victims here in South-Central Kentucky.

Bankers, Realtors and fraud experts all gathered at a conference Thursday to learn more about the issue of real estate scams.

More and more people are using sites like Craigslist and Facebook to search for real estate listings. At the fraud workshop, Realtor Stacey Fergerson said she recently encountered a scam firsthand.

She says other local Realtors have also experienced similar scams where clients have become victims.

Scammers can often collect thousands of dollars if successful. Fergerson said classified advertisement websites can sometimes feature false listings that lead people to fall victim to fraud.

The real-estate fraud workshop Thursday was part of a three-city tour, which stopped in Lexington, Louisville and ended in Bowling Green. Throughout that tour the speakers have heard about real-estate scams picking up all over the state.
