Protests Follow Providence Police Pursuit Crash

Witnesses say officer rammed moped with his cruiser, seriously injuring the driver. Police say they're still reviewing video evidence. WJAR's Brian Crandell reports.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR/NBC News)  — Police in Providence, Rhode Island are facing questions after a moped crash Sunday night that seriously injured the rider.

Witnesses claim a police cruiser hit the moped, causing the crash.  Moped rider Jhamal Gonsalves, 24, is in the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say they don’t know if that’s true.

“That will be a major focus of the investigation,” Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh Clements said at a Monday press conference.

Rhode Island State Police and the attorney general’s office are now involved in the investigation of the crash.

Officer Kyle Endres has been placed on administrative desk duty.

Police say the moped took a hard turn, went up on the curb, and hit a house, but they won’t say why the cruiser also appeared to be on the curb, or if there was any damage to it indicating it hit the moped.
