MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. – One man is behind bars after allegedly fleeing police in Hart County.

According to a uniform citation, the Hart County Sheriff’s Department observed a driver disregard a stop sign at the intersection of Gentry Street and National Turnpike in Munfordville on Saturday.

Authorities say the driver was identified as 53-year-old Timothy Riggs of Upton.

Deputies say while a traffic stop was attempted, Riggs tried to flee in a vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s department, Riggs eventually was traveling 55 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone. He then turned onto McCubbins Lane and continued onto the 1700 block, where authorities say he wrecked his vehicle in a tree line.

After he wrecked his vehicle, deputies say Riggs ran into the woods.

Riggs was placed under arrest.

Deputies say Riggs admitted to using methamphetamine an hour before fleeing police. Authorities say Riggs possessed a clear pipe containing suspected methamphetamine, a plastic bag of marijuana and a large amount of cash.

After medical clearance and a blood draw at The Medical Center at Caverna, Riggs was transported to the Hart County Jail.

In the vehicle Riggs had been driving, authorities say they located suspected methamphetamine, suspected marijuana and diazepam.

Riggs is charged with disregarding a stop sign, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), first-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot), first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense (greater than or equal to 2 grams of methamphetamine), operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and first-degree driving on a suspended license.
