Hurricane Laura has slammed into the Louisiana coast, delivering 150 mile per hour winds and a potentially deadly storm surge at landfall. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

(NBC News) — Hurricane Laura slammed into the Louisiana coast early Thursday, delivering 150 mile per hour winds and a potentially deadly storm surge.

It was the most powerful hurricane to hit the state in 164 years.

As of 8:00 a.m. the storm had weakened, but remained a Category Two hurricane as it pushed inland.

Forecasters have warned that Laura’s storm surge could deadlier than the winds, peaking at up to 20 feet.
