Infant dead after dog attack in Portland, Tennessee, police say

PORTLAND, Tenn. – An infant is dead following a reported dog attack in Portland, Tennessee on Monday morning.

According to a release by the Portland Police Department, on Monday around 7 a.m., officers responded to a residence in Portland to investigate a reported death involving an infant.

Authorities say preliminary findings indicate a dog belonging to the family entered the home through a back door and attacked the infant.

Police say the infant died due to the injuries sustained in the attack.

Upon arrival, police say they encountered the dog, which they say “remained on scene and showed aggressive behavior.”

Authorities say for the safety of those present, responding officers euthanized the animal.

There is no ongoing threat to the public, police say.

The case remains under investigation.
