Migrant boat capsizes near Spain’s Canary Islands, 4 dead
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Spanish authorities say four people died when a migrant boat believed to be carrying 45 passengers capsized in Spain’s Canary Islands. The boat was approaching the island of Lanzarote on Thursday night when it flipped over close to land. Emergency workers rescued 41 people, including 19 women and seven children, with sub-Saharan nationalities. They also recovered the bodies of three adults and a boy. Spain’s national police said emergency workers searched for victims throughout the night and into Friday afternoon, when they found the last victim. The number of people embarking on the perilous Atlantic voyage from West Africa to the Canaries has increased significantly in the last few years.
