London pledges contribution to Auschwitz-Birkenau foundation
LONDON (AP) — London Mayor Sadiq Khan has pledged 300,000 pounds ($390,000) to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation in Poland. He said Monday that the money will help the institution educate Londoners visiting the site of the Nazi German death camp about the horrors of the Holocaust. Khan joins Paris and several countries in giving money to preserve the remains of the camp where some 1.1 million people died during World War II. The money will go to a fund to conserve the physical remnants of the site — the barracks, watchtowers and personal items like shoes and suitcases of those killed. The strain of time and mass tourism has prompted a long-term conservation effort at the site.
