Gerard Gallant expects the New York Rangers to take a big step in his first season as coach. Owner James Dolan and new president and general manager Chris Drury have made it clear the expectation is to win soon. That makes the initial expectations for Gallant different than his previous stints with Columbus, Florida and Vegas. Gallant says he will not approach his fourth NHL head-coaching job any differently. He has a solid core of talented players to work with, including defenseman Adam Fox, star winger Artemi Panarin, 2020 No. 1 pick Alexis Lafrenière and 2019 No. 2 pick Kaapo Kakko.
