“Dangerous:” Around world, police chokeholds scrutinized

LE PECQ, France (AP) — The death of George Floyd has renewed scrutiny of immobilization techniques long used in policing around the world. There has been criticism of techniques that have been blamed for asphyxiations and other deaths in police custody beyond American shores. Police rules and procedures on chokeholds and restraints vary internationally. Even within countries, procedures can vary. In France, a lawmaker was pushing before the coronavirus pandemic for a ban on the police use of face-down holds. In Belgium, a police instructor systematically reprimands trainees who use their knees on spinal columns.
