Woman dies of possible drowning in Metcalfe County river, child flown for treatment

METCALFE COUNTY, Ky. – Authorities are investigating the possible drowning death of a woman in Metcalfe County.

According to a media release from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Kentucky State Police Post 15 received a report of a possible drowning at the end of Cedar Top Little Barren Road on Monday at 7:57 p.m.

Metcalfe County Deputy Jarrod Steele arrived first at the scene and located a female floating in the water and a small male juvenile holding onto a rock at the mouth of Little Barren River, officials say.

According to fish and wildlife, Steele rescued the juvenile and brought him back to shore. The male juvenile was transported and later flown to an area hospital for treatment. The juvenile is expected to survive, according to the release.

Steele and firefighters retrieved the woman from the water and attempted life-saving measures. Officials say the woman could not be revived. Officials identified the woman as Amber West of Edmonton.

The investigation is ongoing.
