Belmont Stakes: New York a standard-setter on medications

NEW YORK (AP) — Medication of horses is a central focus of the racing industry in light of Bob Baffert-trained Medina Spirit failing a drug test after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Horse Racing Safety and Integrity Act that goes into effect in July 2022. Baffert wasn’t eligible to enter any horses in the Belmont Stakes because the New York Racing Association suspended him. It’s the latest example of New York taking the issue seriously, and the state’s stakeholders have been helping lead the way in the medication regulation department for years. The new rules could include many things New York has pioneered.
