BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A highway safety improvement project is expected to start this week on a section of U.S. 31-E in Barren County.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, drivers should expect daytime lane closures from near J. Carter Road to near the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Expressway.

Crews are expected to complete drainage improvements in several locations along this section of roadway.

According to transportation officials, a new turn lane will be added on U.S. 31-E at Windy Hills Road. Minor road widening also will be completed throughout the corridor.

Transportation officials say the widening will create a 4-foot centerline buffer between opposing travel lanes.

This safety enhancement is intended to reduce the risk of head-on collisions, according to the transportation cabinet.

The road will also be resurfaced throughout this section.

Drivers are urged to use caution and expect delays until the project is complete later this year.
