Golf scramble raises thousands for trooper killed in the line of duty
CUB RUN, Ky. – A golf scramble fundraiser was held Tuesday morning to help raise money for the family of Trooper Hayden Phillips, who was killed in the line of duty off of Interstate 65 on Sept. 28.
Thirty-nine teams teed off in Edmonson County in support of Phillips.
The Shady Hollow Golf Scramble raised thousands of dollars for the family of the fallen officer.
Hundreds of golfers showed out in support, some life-long golfers and others swinging a club for the very first time.
“I think there’s more teams than they have golf carts, but all this is for Trooper Hayden Phillip’s family and another way to support them. And I mean, it’s just wonderful to see the community do so much. And even a month later, everybody is still reaching out and dropping things off and seeing things and asking what they can do. And, just for us, it’s a bittersweet moment. It kind of humbles and makes us realize that, ‘hey, we have the community behind us,’” said Public Affairs Officer Katan Parker with Kentucky State Police Post Three.
Brad Johnson, the co-manager of the Shady Hollow Golf Course, says he actually had to add extra golf carts to fulfill the need on the green. Johnson says they had such a successful turn out they had to turn away teams from the scramble after it filled up.
“I heard somebody say at a tragic event a few years back that, you know, the family needs you now, they need help now. But they’re always going to need help, you know, three years from now, five years from now, they’re still going to need help. A widow raising three boys, so, we just need to wrap the community’s love around them and help them any way we can. And we’re dedicated to doing that,” said Johnson.
Johnson hopes to host this every year for the family.
