Glasgow 20th century landmark transformed to Airbnb – dates booking fast!

GLASGOW, Ky. – The Rock House in Glasgow has been around since the turn of the 20th century. Now, it’s a new Airbnb and the perfect place for tourists to enjoy Southcentral Kentucky’s old and new.

From a general store, to a restaurant to a cab company, The Rock House offered the community many services before sitting stagnant for a decade.

Peggy Bates knew the building had more life ahead of it.

“[My family and I] had been driving by here and seeing this set dormant for years,” she said. “It looked sad. It was a brown brick on the front, had this ugly brown siding on the side. And it just looked like it could be something.”

Bates bought the place three years ago with a massive project ahead of her. Trying to preserve the history while transforming the interior to contemporary.

“It was a complete gut job,” she recalled. “Everything in here had to be retouched. The floors, we couldn’t keep floors or walls. A lot of it had sat here for years and just deteriorated.”

With family effort, the solidary stone is now a historic oasis – a two bedroom, Airbnb complete with a kitchen, washer and dryer.

The Airbnb is already a smashing success for Glasgow Tourism.

Glasgow Tourism intern Landry Steenbergen said, “It’s right in the middle of town, so it’s exactly what we’re looking for to get people out to see Glasgow and see the area. It’s very modern and new, and so they’ve really done a good job of making a small space bigger.”

Bates welcomed the Airbnb’s first guest this last weekend, and immediately January, February, March, even through parts of October, are booked booked full.

Barren County judge-executive Michael Hale said, “This is an old  building that they have took and they have revamped, and they gave it life again so it has a purpose. Just come to Glasgow and check it out.”

Bates invited, “Anyone who has history or family connection here, we’d love to hear the stories.”
