First Christian Church helps to fight food insecurity in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, KY.- First Christian Church is helping address food insecurity in the Bowling Green community through its free grocery store, providing families with access to fresh produce and other essential food items.
Volunteers say many first-time visitors are surprised by the selection of healthy foods available, particularly the fresh fruits and vegetables.
Linda Holian, chair of the Community Grocery Store, said the ministry was inspired by a desire to ensure families, especially children, have access to nutritious food.
“I saw the impact of healthy nutrition for children, and I can’t stand the thought of any child going hungry,” Holian said.
Church leaders say the program is more than a traditional food pantry. Since evolving into a free grocery store in 2021, the ministry has focused on reducing food insecurity while encouraging healthy eating habits.
The grocery store receives support through donations from community members and local organizations. Volunteers also partner with a Feeding America food distribution at Lincoln Park, collecting surplus food to help stock the shelves.
“We have people who are food insecure, and this is our way of being the hands and feet of Christ to help them get what they need,” Holian said.
Organizers say the ministry continues to rely on community support and volunteers as it works to provide nutritious food and hope to families across the region.
