Donate Life Month raises awareness for organ donation

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – April marks National Donate Life Month, a nationwide effort to encourage people to register as organ and tissue donors and highlight the lifesaving impact of donation.

Advocates say the month serves as a critical reminder for those who may not have considered becoming a donor, especially as many families continue to wait for life-saving transplants.

“Donate life month is, incredibly important to so many families,” said Dinette Idlett, executive director of Life’s Better Together. “I can tell you a few specifically that we are working with currently that are, on transplant lists, waiting for organs.”

According to advocates, even a single donor can have a far-reaching impact, with the ability to save and improve dozens of lives through organ and tissue donation.

In Kentucky, residents can register to become donors when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license or by visiting the state’s website, where prompts often appear during routine services like filing taxes.

Supporters say increasing awareness during April can help grow the number of registered donors and ultimately save more lives.

Wednesday is DMV Appreciation Day, and next week is National Pediatric Transplant Week, both recognized as part of the broader Donate Life observances.
