Community gathers for Junteenth event
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The community gathered in the Shake Rag Historic District Friday night to commemorate and honor Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation.
The local Juneteenth event was organized by the Bowling Green Freedom Walkers who described the event as a block party. In the early hours of the gathering organizers had speakers of varying backgrounds share the history of Juneteenth and the importance of it to the local community.
Organizers brought food and drinks to hand out to attendees.
In this area, Juneteenth is also observed in August.
