Church fire closes street near WKU’s Cherry Hall

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A fire broke out in one Bowling Green church just feet away from Western Kentucky University.

Just after 3:00 p.m., almost 30 rescue units responded to a fire near WKU’s Hall.

The Bowling Green Fire Department extinguished fire and black smoke coming from a back window of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center.

No one was inside during the fire.

“They were able to find the source of the fire,” said BGFD Public Information Officer Katie McKee. “Thankfully nobody was inside whenever it occurred, and they are out there working to make sure minimal damage is possible.”

BGFD says the fire is completely extinguished now. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire on the scene as of 4:45 p.m.
