Boys and Girls Club in Glasgow to begin work on expansion of club’s campus

GLASGOW, Ky. (Glasgow News 1) – The Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County is soon starting work on the Guilfoil Recreation Center, a new expansion to the club’s campus on Columbia Avenue, according to a report by Glasgow News 1.

Glasgow News 1 reports that, according to CEO Mallie Boston, the project, located at 801 Columbia Ave., “has been in serious development for about two years and is fully funded through private donor support, including Ambassador Kelly Craft.”

Boston additionally stated a gym of its own and a permanent space for it was needed by the club, Glasgow News 1 states.

According to the report, the Guilfoil Recreation Center is planned to be in a separate lot from the club’s main building, located at 701 Columbia Ave.

The report further states a groundwork phase is expected to take the most time due to concrete and soil conditions.

So far, Glasgow News 1 says Boston confirmed crews already completed geotechnical surveying.

In the near future, Boston says a prefabricated building for the center will be delivered in Glasgow and may be staged in another location to provide visible progress, according to the report.

According to Glasgow News 1, Boston said the inside of the recreation center will include “two middle school-size courts, restrooms, showers, concessions and ticketing space, with a pull-out stage option for events.”

Boston stated the club expects to use the space for basketball and volleyball leagues, along with workforce development functions and other healthy lifestyle-related events, Glasgow News 1 says.

In addition, the report states Boston said she and staff are looking into potential memberships or an open gym schedule for young adults due to a high demand for gym space in the area.

According to Glasgow News 1, Boston also said the back part of the site is “envisioned as a new green space,” including a community garden, playground options and turf areas, dependent on funding and grants.

Boston said the existing club building will stay as “a central hub for programs,” the report states.

According to the report, Boston said the project will also help the club to serve more children and young adults while offering low-cost child care, academic help and enrichment activities.

“Boston said donor support and community buy-in have made it possible for a community the size of Glasgow to develop what she believes will be one of the largest Boys and Girls Club campuses in Kentucky,” according to Glasgow News 1.
