BG Daily News to be sold following 140 years of local ownership

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Daily News has announced it will be sold after being owned by the Gaines family for 140 years.

According to an article by the Bowling Green Daily News, Carpenter Newsmedia LLC, an affiliate of Alabama-based Boone Newspapers Inc., a family-owned organization, is purchasing the publication after an agreement was reached.

The Daily News further states the sale will include the Daily News and several other publications, such as Bowling Green Home and Lifestyles, South Central Kentucky Homes and Auction Guide.

The earliest roots of the Daily News reach back to 1854, and the Gaineses’ ownership has continued since John B. Gaines founded the Bowling Green Daily Times in 1882, according to the article. The Daily Times joined the Bowling Green Democrat to make the predecessor of the Daily News.

The Daily News article also included the following statement from Pipes Gaines, publisher emeritus of the Daily News and co-owner of the newspaper along with his sons, Publisher Scott Gaines and Editor Steve Gaines:

“It was indeed a difficult decision, and it wasn’t one that was made quickly or easily. For 140 years, it’s been an incredible legacy. We look back on it with a lot of pride.”

“Over the decades we have put out a quality product that has served our advertisers and readers very well. … We didn’t do this by ourselves. The employees who work here now or in the past have had a major part in any success we have had.

The Gaines family’s company, News Publishing LLC, will continue to own the Daily News’ downtown office building at 813 College St. The Gaineses will also remain owners of the radio stations WDNS 93.3 FM and WKCT 104.1 FM/930 AM, both headquartered at 804 College St.

The article further states the sale will likely close on June 30.
