Baffert goes for 8th Preakness win without valued assistant

(AP) — Bob Baffert is aiming to win a record-breaking eighth Preakness Stakes with Authentic or Thousand Words. He’ll try to do so with right-hand man Jimmy Barnes 3,000 miles away back in California. Barnes broke his right wrist when Thousand Words reared up in the paddock before the Kentucky Derby that Authentic went on to win. Baffert is jokingly asking around for help saddling his horses in the Preakness this Saturday. But the two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer talks to his assistant multiple times a day and will lean on the rest of his staff in Barnes’ absence.
