Alvaton Fire encourages citizens to be aware of first responders during emergency stops
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After numerous close calls during an emergency traffic stop on Interstate 65 on May 26, local fire departments are asking drivers to be more aware of first responders on the road.
Last Tuesday, the Alvaton Fire Department says it dealt with around seven accidents in a 10-hour span, some of which took place around the 19-mile marker of I-65.
First responders were able to set up blocking apparatus and traffic cones but still had numerous close calls with cars hitting cones, sliding to a stop to avoid first responders and driving in between police cars and fire trucks.
These cones and blocking apparatus are put in place to protect the initial victims of the accidents, but they are also in place to ensure the safety of the first responders, tow truck drivers and highway workers involved.
It is important to remember that it is a state law to slow down or move when nearing emergency vehicles. Furthermore, it is crucial to be aware of the weather and slow down when the roads aren’t in the best condition, as it can lead to sliding vehicles.
Firefighters and first responders ensure the safety of those in the community, so it is important to be mindful and obey laws so that they can make it home as well.
“So the primary response is making sure that we can safely operate out there while providing the necessary service to the citizens,” said Bill Rector, Warren County Fire Chief. “We want people to slow down. We want them to move over so the responders, tow truck drivers and Department of Transportation personnel can clean up the incident and reopen the roadway. The sooner we reopen the roadway, the safer it is for everyone.”
