Allen County students step back in time with Dumont Hill Expedition

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Students in Allen County got a hands-on history lesson Monday as they stepped into the past during a unique Civil War reenactment experience.

The Allen County Schools Patriot Pathfinders hosted the “Dumont Hill Expedition” at Dugas Community Park in Scottsville, bringing history to life for more than 250 third-grade students.

The event featured a Civil War-style encampment, complete with costumes, demonstrations and interactive stations designed to show what life was like during that time. Organizers say the goal was to move beyond traditional classroom learning and give students a deeper, more personal understanding of history.

Heather Pierce, gifted and talented coordinator with Allen County Schools, says the experience allows students to connect with history in a meaningful way.

“Rather than sit in a classroom and listen to lectures about the Civil War, or about how Allen County was a part of that time, of our history, they’ve been able to take part in this experience, work with the historical society to do research, read primary and secondary sources and step into the role of someone who was here in Dumont,” Pierce said.

The event also gave students in the Patriot Pathfinders program an opportunity to take on leadership roles by helping organize and present the reenactment.

Organizers say events like this not only teach history but also help students build critical thinking skills and a stronger connection to their community.

The Dumont Hill Expedition was supported by several local organizations, including the Allen County Historical Society, the City of Scottsville Historic Preservation Commission and Dugas Community Park.
