Kentucky Museum hosts Women’s Equality Day reception; two exhibits leading to 19th Amendment
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Kentucky Museum will host its Women’s Equality Day Reception this week. The museum planned to host this event last year to honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment.
Due to the pandemic, the museum only now will showcase their two exhibits honoring women’s rights: Kentucky Women Rising and Seat at the Table: Kentucky Women in Office.
Kentucky Museum Education Curator Christy Spurlock said many of the women who shaped Kentucky changed the world with their political trailblazing and humanitarian activism.
“Things that we take for granted now as professional women in the workplace didn’t all exist 50 years ago, much less 100 years ago,” said Spurlock.
The free celebration takes place at the Museum with a reception from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
Kentucky Museum Director Brent Björkman said he’s hoping for a big turn out.
“This is really an exhibit that hasn’t been seen much because we were closed due to Covid for quite some time last year, so we’re hoping that a lot of people will be here to join in and learn about Kentucky this way,” said Björkman.
Two of the women honored in the Seat at the table exhibit, Former Lieutenant Governor Jenean Hampton and Kentucky State Representative Patti Minter, will attend the exhibit reception.
Spurlock encourages anyone with an appreciation for women’s rights to come enjoy the exhibit themselves.
“Women fought and devoted their lives for the equal rights that we enjoy today, so I can’t think of anything in American history that’s more important,” said Spurlock.
