JROTC students placed flags on military graves for Memorial Day
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Tuesday morning, students from Bowling Green High School volunteered their time to honor veterans for Memorial Day.
Fairview Cemetery on Cemetery Road is home to over 1,100 military graves.
At around 8 a.m., a dozen Junior ROTC boys started placing flags in front of each headstone.
Douglas McKinney, the Army Instructor JROTC at Bowling Green High School says this is a service project about honor.
“It brings awareness to what this weekend is all about which is all about Memorial Day and honor the people who have went before us and paid the ultimate price some of them in service and some of them after service,” said McKinney.
School let out last week, so the students did this all during their summer break as volunteers.
Cole Renfrow, the 2021 battalion commander, just graduated from High School.
“Well, I’ve just done it for the past three years. It’s just something that I have always done. It’s nice to give back to those who have served, even though they have sadly passed away and it’s just my way of showing respect to them,” said Renfrow.
Bowling Green High School Junior ROTC has been participating in this event for over a decade.
“I think it’s a good thing for them to know what this week is about I think it’s a good thing for them to do that shows their patriotism to the country which is something that you don’t always see nowadays so it’s kind of refreshing to see them out there doing the things and schools out it’s volunteering so you know they could’ve been lying in bed right now but they came out here and helped put up the flags which is honorable,” said McKinney.
The boys will come back out in about a week to pick the flags back up and place them into storage.
