Pakistan forces try to clear sit-ins by protesting Islamists

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani security forces swinging batons and firing teargas have moved to clear sit-ins by protesting Islamists in the garrison city of Rawalpindi and elsewhere. The government action comes two days after clashes between demonstrators and police left three demonstrators and two police officers dead. The Islamists were angered over Monday’s arrest of Saad Rizvi, the head of an Islamist political party. Police cleared a key road that was blocked by demonstrators on the outskirts of Islamabad. But they were still trying to bring the situation under control Wednesday in Rawalpindi, Lahore and elsewhere.
