Allen County Boys and Girls Club shutting their doors until early 2027

SIMPSON COUNTY, Ky.- Over the summer, children’s programs across south Kentucky have all been taking a hit financially and some closing down. Now added to that list is the Scottsville location of the boys and girls club.

“One of the things that weighed heavy on us was that we may not see those kids again for a while and that was very hard obviously,”

The Scottsville location of the Boys and Girls Clubs are shutting their doors until January 2027. The organization shared the sad news on social media which had a chain reaction from the community.

“We recently had to pause our summer program operations due to some operational challenges we had due to funding and staffing challenges,” said Brittany Curry, the CEO of the Franklin, Simpson location of the Boys and Girls Club.

She said the price to stay afloat has been tough.

“Operational expenses are around $240,000 a year but in order to run it fully with taxes and the property insurance it would be about $400,000. We do receive a bit of support from the local government there, specifically the fiscal court has been wonderful for us but otherwise it’s very limited, we simply just don’t receive any enough in individual donations and business donations,” she said.

Curry said the Scottsville location isn’t the only one shutting down. There’s been a domino effect due to funding within the boys and girls club organization.

“Boys and girls clubs, especially across the country, are facing challenges. so, this club has been here for 20 years, and it’s got its own set of challenges but the day or day after we announced the Allen County club was closing a club in Michigan announced they will be closing and they’ve been there for 50 years,” Curry said.

She said federal funding has affected many non-profits but that doesn’t take off the work for preparing our youth to dominate the future.

“If you don’t have money, you can pay your bills, so what do you, you don’t. to the parent and to the community and to the kids to that fact it’s we want to be there. we do. If we are able to come back, please trust us. Please be a part of us, please support us,” Curry said.
