FIRST ON WNKY40 – Kentucky State Police investigate police-involved shooting in Hart County

BONNIEVILLE, Ky. — A Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and injured in that county and the shooting suspect was killed Wednesday after fleeing to Hart County.

“Kentucky State Police are currently in the early stages of investigating an officer involved shooting,” Kentucky State Police Post 3 spokesman Trooper Daniel Priddy said. “We can confirm a Breckinridge County deputy sheriff suffered a gun shot wound and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”

The pursuit of the suspect led to an encounter with law-enforcement in Hart County. The suspect and law-enforcement exchanged gunfire resulting in the death of the suspect, Priddy said.

The incident began at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday after the deputy was shot following a traffic stop. The shooter ran away and is accused of stealing a truck.

State troopers found the truck in the Wax community in Grayson County and pursued it.

During the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle, James Horton, 42, of Clarkson fired multiple gun shots at law enforcement, according to a state police release. Upon the conclusion of the pursuit in Bonnieville, the driver exited the vehicle with a firearm and a trooper shot Horton, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Hart County Coroner’s Office.

No one else was injured. Kentucky State Police critical incident response team is investigating.

The Breckinridge County deputy was flown from the scene of the traffic stop to the University of Louisville Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
