Portland Protesters Topple Downtown Statues
Statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were pulled own in what demonstrators dubbed "Indigenous Peoples Day of Rage ." KGW's Christelle Koumoue reports.
(KGW/NBC News) — Police declared a riot in downtown Portland, Oregon, Sunday night after a group of demonstrators toppled statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
The demonstration was organized as an “Indigenous Peoples Day of Rage.”
The protest began as a march calling for an end of colonialism and the abolishment of police but quickly turned violent. Several businesses were damaged, as well as the Oregon Historical Society Museum, where windows and glass doors were shattered.
