Laura’s Death Toll Climbs
At least nine deaths are now being blamed on Hurricane Laura; hundreds of thousands more remain without power. NBC's Chris Pollone reports.
(NBC News) — Hurricane Laura is gone, but the effects of the storm will be felt for years in parts of Louisiana and Texas.
At least nine people died in the hurricane, and thousands of homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed.
As residents start to clean up, they are stunned over the damage left behind.
“Driving around town, it’s a war zone, it really is,” says Todd Bulter of Sulfur, Louisiana.
The eye of Laura barreled through the small town of Sulfur, downing power lines, shredding roofs and ripping trees from the ground.
“it’s much worse than I ever anticipated,” Bulter says.
Laura’s deadly force killed at least six in Louisiana. To the west in Port Arthur, Texas officials say carbon monoxide poisoning has killed three people and left six more struggling to survive.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands are without power.
