Coronavirus closures expand
San Francisco area orders nearly 7 million to stay home as efforts to contain the COVID-19 virus intensifies. NBC's Chris Pollone reports.
(NBC News) In New York City, closing time ushered in an uncertain time Monday evening.
The nation’s largest city joined others across the country forcing gathering spots to close indefinitely.
Tuesday morning, seven million people in the San Francisco Bay area woke up under a mandatory order to stay home, the most drastic step against coronavirus in the nation so far.
“These measures will be disruptive to day to day life, but there is no need to panic,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed told residents.
It comes as the White House issues its toughest guidelines to date, a 15-day push to slow COVID-19’s spread.
The measures include closing schools in affected areas, avoiding discretionary travel, avoiding groups of 10 or more people and working from home when possible.
Around a dozen states now have drive-thru testing.
The White House claims 2,000 labs could process nearly two million tests by the end of the week.
Despite rumors to the contrary, the president says a nationwide lockdown is not on the table, at least not yet.
