Hilltoppers Blank Union in 2-0 Victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Soccer (3-0-2) continued its strong start with a 2-0 shutout victory over Union on Thursday night at the WKU Soccer Complex. April McDonald and Sophia Lezizidis each scored in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hilltoppers came out firing against Union, controlling the pace and keeping the Bulldogs on their heels throughout the first half. Despite outshooting Union 12-1 in the opening half, WKU was unable to find the back of the net.

In the 46th minute, April McDonald got the Hilltoppers on the board with a header off a corner kick from Georgia Liapis, with Mya Jackson also assisting on the goal. The goal marked McDonald’s third header off a Liapis corner kick in as many games. Sophia Lezizidis followed in the 80th minute, scoring off a free kick into the upper left corner of the net for her first goal of the 2026 season.

QUOTABLE

“I liked that every field player that was available got into the game tonight,” said head coach Jason Neidell. “That was hopefully the plan from the beginning. We got to see some freshmen in some good situations. The fact that it was a close game was even better for us because we were able to get people some experience under pressure.”
