Cultural Awareness Corvette Weekend brings memories to local seniors

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Corvette owners taking part in Cultural Awareness Corvette Weekend brought part of the celebration directly to residents at Signature HealthCARE in Bowling Green.
The annual event celebrates African American Corvette owners and enthusiasts while remaining open to everyone. The weekend includes plant tours, social events, seminars and community service projects.
Bringing the experience to residents
Organizers said the Signature HealthCARE stop gave residents who may not be able to attend other weekend events a chance to see the cars up close and hear the engines.
“Joy. Happiness. Bringing back memories from childhood here in the engine red. Just that thrill and excitement that you get from driving and running a Corvette,” Darla Waymon said.
Waymon said organizers wanted to bring something special to the facility while giving back to the community. She also noted that some residents have family connections to Bowling Green’s Corvette industry.
“Bringing it here to them brings those memories back to life,” she said.
A personal connection
For Corvette owner John Matthews, the visit carried a personal meaning.
“one day I might be in this position, you know, and I would love for someone to take out the time to come out here. It’s a cherished memories to bring back memories,” Matthews said.
Matthews said there may come a time when he is no longer able to drive, making the chance to bring the cars directly to residents especially meaningful.
“We’re all going to get old, you know, so we’re all going to get maybe in a position that would not be able to drive anymore,” he said. “And it’s just it’s just hard touching for me.”
Giving back during Corvette weekend
The Signature HealthCARE visit was one of several community-focused activities connected to the weekend. Participants said another event that day focused on children.
For residents, the stop offered a chance to experience part of Corvette weekend without leaving the facility — and, for some, to reconnect with memories sparked by the cars and their engines.
