Cam Ward prepares to lead a fast and violent Tennessee Titans offense
NASHVILLE, Tn. – The Tennessee Titans reported to the Vanderbilt Health Football Center on Wednesday for the first day of training camp for the 2026 season.
Two words we’ve heard from the squad since Robert Saleh took over as head coach this past offseason are fast and violent.
Those are the words the Titans are building their identity around this year and it fits, considering Saleh’s defensive roots, but that mentality doesn’t stop on that side of the ball.
“It’s not just hitting,” Saleh said. “It’s how violently you get out of your break. It’s how violently you cut. It’s how violently you get off the ball. It’s how violent you are in transition. The way the o-line runs off the ball in the run game, the way the receivers transition out of the break…”
At the forefront of that physical offense is Cam Ward. As he begins his second year in the NFL, the young quarterback still has a lot to learn, but acknowledged where he thinks he’s grown the most since last season.
“The biggest thing is situational,” Ward said. “That’s watching with (offensive coordinator Brian Daboll), it’s not the play or the concept, it’s the why he’s calling the play. It’s the time on the clock and how the game is going. Everything. I just think situationally and awareness of everyone else’s position has been my biggest change.”
While his awareness stands out as an area of growth, both Ward and his coach are already putting an emphasis on another area they would like to see really take off in 2026: third downs.
“When you look on film, those are downs that can win or lose you a game,” Ward said. “Those are downs that quarterbacks get paid the most to be successful at a high rate on those downs. That’s where it has to click for you, you know?”
For Saleh, third downs are one of three areas he wants his quarterback to beyond excel in to meet those fast and violent expectations.
“The quarterback metric is third down, red zone and two minute,” Saleh said. “Those are the three categories where the quarterback’s got to shine and pull the team along, if you will.”
Coach Saleh’s plan with training camp is to increase volume and intensity every practice, so things are only going to ramp up in Nashville with the conclusion of day one of training camp.
