WKU women’s golf head coach Adam Gary competes in 107th Kentucky Open

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – When we get to hear from a local team’s coach, its often on how a season is going, but its not very common we get to see coaches step off the sidelines and actually compete in the sport they know inside out.

WKU women’s golf head coach Adam Gary is among 156 golfers competing in the 107th Kentucky Open held right here in Bowling Green this year at Indian Hills Country Club.

Over the course of three days, both professional and amateur golfers compete for one of Kentucky’s most prestigious golf championship titles.

Gary said it was hard to pass up competing in the event, especially with it being in his hometown on a course that he grew up playing.

It also helps him be a better coach, knowing how to teach his players while keeping his own game sharp.

“ I think it’s important as a coach to keep your competitiveness up to where you can relate to the players,” Gary said. “I see other coaches get mad at a ball out of bounds or a three putt, but then when you play in a tournament, you do it yourself. So I think it helps to relate, and it kind of gives me some perspective to help me coach.”

Gary shot a 75 on day one of competition, tied for 76th at 4-over-par.

Only the top 70 golfers after day two will compete in the final round.
