Corvette Plant Fuels Kentucky Economy
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – New economic data from General Motors shows the Bowling Green Assembly Plant supports $1.65 billion in Kentucky’s gross domestic product, underscoring the Corvette plant’s impact beyond manufacturing.
According to GM, every $1 in direct GDP generated by the company supports another $2 in economic activity statewide, creating a three-to-one economic multiplier. The company also says every $10 GM generates directly becomes about $30 in total economic activity, while $1 billion in GM output supports about $3 billion in Kentucky’s GDP.
The Bowling Green Assembly Plant employs 1,200 people, and GM estimates each job supports an additional 8.8 jobs throughout the community. The company also works with 173 suppliers across Kentucky and says its capital and operational spending generate another $1.6 billion in economic activity.
Plant Director Ray Theriault said the figures represent more than dollars.
“The numbers really support people… All of that economic activity certainly helps support the people behind the numbers. And that’s what I’m most proud of,” he said.
This year marks 45 years of Corvette production in Bowling Green. Theriault said the plant’s success is tied to the community’s support.
“Bowling Green embraced Corvette, and Corvette embraced Bowling Green,” he said. “The community has embraced the plant as well as it has, and the plant embraces the community.”
Beyond manufacturing, GM says it has contributed $860 million through Community Impact grants over the past five years, while employees continue volunteering with local organizations.
Theriault said the people behind the numbers are what matter most.
“We’ve talked about billions of dollars… The important part to remember is all those numbers translate to families. They translate to people,” he said.
