FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police has added a specialized armored vehicle to its fleet.

According to a release by KSP, the “Rook” armored vehicle will enhance its ability to respond to calls and prioritize safety.

“Our brave law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to make our communities safer,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “Providing them the resources they need not only boosts public safety, but also helps ensure they can return home safely to their family at the end of each shift.”

Authorities say the Rook is a tactical vehicle designed to protect officers, including in hostage situations, barricaded subject incidents, riot responses and natural disaster scenarios.

The agency says the design allows it to operate in confined spaces.

It also includes interchangeable attachments, such as a hydraulic fork for removing obstacles and an armored personnel cage, authorities say.

KSP says the Rook is the only such vehicle in the Commonwealth and one of only 108 in the United States.

According to the agency, the vehicle was purchased using funds seized from criminal activity that are in turn used at no additional cost to Kentucky taxpayers. Authorities say the vehicle has already been used eight times and has proven to be “a life-saving tool, helping breach barricades and protect troopers while serving high-risk warrants.”
