Crittenden County sheriff’s deputy shot in line of duty dies from injuries

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, Ky. – Crittenden County Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Coyle has died due to injuries sustained in the line of duty earlier this month.
According to a social media post by Gov. Andy Beshear on Thursday, Coyle died due to his injuries after being shot during a law enforcement response in Crittenden County on April 2.
Troopers say a preliminary investigation found the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services responded to 2807 KY-365 in Sturgis on this date to serve emergency guardianship paperwork.
According to authorities, gunfire was exchanged with the suspect, 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, who was fatally wounded.
On this date, Coyle was hit by gunfire from the suspect and was flown to a hospital, according to KSP.
A female victim was safely removed from the residence. No other injuries were reported.
The Kentucky State Police released the following statement on social media on Thursday:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Deputy Rick Coyle from the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. He served with courage, honor and a steadfast commitment to protecting others. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow officers during this difficult time. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
