Local business discusses Derby outfit trends
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Kentucky Derby is this week, and each day has its own theme, but have you picked out your outfit for the ‘Run for Roses’?
According to Kathleen Overton, owner of Prim and Brim, Kelly Green and pink are in style, along with fascinators.
“Some of the things we’ve seen this year is that Derby is not just on Saturday, Derby week has really gotten big. So it starts on Tuesday with 502’sDay, and then Wednesday is Winsday, Thursday, Thurby, Kentucky Oaks is on Friday and on Saturday is Derby. So, each day kind of have their own theme as well, obviously for Oaks on Friday its in support of breast cancer awareness so people wear pink,” Overton said.
Take a look at each day of the week:
- Monday: Dawn at the Downs. This is the day fans can watch contenders during their workouts. This event is early in the morning so having a cardigan to keep warm would be recommended.
- Tuesday: 502’sDay. This day highlights the community in Louisville. According to the website, visitors and locals are encouraged to wear outfits from local shops and brands.
- Wednesday: Winsday. This day presents support to non-profits with the purchase of each ticket. Wear the brand of the non-profit you’re supporting or the colors of it with a pin.
- Thursday: Thurby. This day celebrates Kentucky’s deep roots and Bluegrass traditions. Navy blue, gold, white and green are Kentucky’s flag colors. Pastel colors, florals, wide brims and headbands are also in style. Choose any of those colors within elegant jumpsuits, midi dresses, light blazers and block heels for walking or flats and sandals.
- Friday: Kentucky Oaks. This day is the official ‘Pink Out’ day that celebrates breast cancer awareness. Persian rose, fluorescent pink, hot pink, pastel pink and light blushes are all in style. Pink brim hats and fascinators paired with a midi dress, or jumpsuit are ideas to go with. Pleated pink dresses and heels or satin and floral dresses are good choices as well. Any breast cancer awareness pin would be a great compliment to the outfit.
- Saturday: Kentucky Derby. This is the day of the ‘Run for the Roses.’ Polkadot, lilac, butter yellow, pastel blue, anything floral, pinks, greens and stripes are all trending outfit styles for this day. Cateye sunglasses are always a classic. Don’t forget to wear your hat or fascinator for good luck. Purses that match your hat and shoes are a plus but must not exceed the size 12 x 6 x 12. Bags also can be different colors and do not have to be clear.
