Driver allegedly hits, kills sixth-grade basketball coach in Marion County

LEBANON, Ky. (K105) – A sixth-grade basketball coach is dead after authorities say he was struck by a vehicle in Kentucky on Friday.

According to a report by K105, the crash occurred Friday evening on Bradfordsville Road in Marion County.

K105 reports a Kentucky State Police investigation found 35-year-old Jacob Buckingham of Bradfordsville was traveling south on Bradfordsville Road in a pickup truck in a no-passing zone when he entered the northbound lane while attempting to pass a vehicle.

Authorities say during this time, Buckingham collided head-on with a northbound vehicle driven by 21-year-old Mason May of Lebanon, according to K105.

K105 further states May was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Buckingham was transported to Spring View Hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. According to K105, troopers have not released information regarding charges being filed against Buckingham.

K105 further reports May was a sixth-grade basketball coach at St. Augustine School in Lebanon.

The school posted the following statement on May’s death:

“It is with a heavy heart to hear the passing of our 6th grade basketball coach, Mason May. He put his heart and soul into coaching. He made such a difference in the lives of our St. A boys in his short time here. We are praying for our students and his family in this difficult time. John 16:22. ‘So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice and no one will take your joy from you.’”
